Homemade Laundry Detergent

I started making my own laundry detergent several months ago. Having a professional furniture maker for a husband, you can imagine that I wash a LOT of laundry! After reading about homemade detergent for years, I finally just made some of my own.

Homemade Laundry Detergent Ingredients

The Ingredients:

1 bar of laundry soap (today I used FELS-NAPTHA but I have used other brands, including plain ole Ivory)
1 CUP of Super Washing Soda
1 CUP of Borax

The Technique:

Cut the bar of soap into 8 chunks and blend 4 chunks at a time with a tablespoon of the borax until crumbly. The borax will prevent the soap from caking. Be carfeful not too much Borax or the soap won't crumble. Then mix all ingredients together in an airtight container.

NOTE: For the previous batches, I grated the soap by hand. Today, I used the blender. I like the results much better!

The Results:

Homemade Laundry Detergent

I use one level chinese soup spoon per load. All the "recipes" I've read say 1 tablespoon per load. Most folks don't have a professional furniture maker for a husband so I use a little more. I am VERY pleased with the results. This homemade soap recipe works better than any store bought laundry detergent I've used plus it is much less expensive.

Wish I could recall where I found the original recipe years ago. I've come across it (or variations) so many times that it's hard to know who posted it first. All in all it takes about 5 minutes to make a batch of Homemade Laundry Detergent. Super easy, super fast, works great! Try it yourself!

Today I am baking with my daughter and remembering my mom.

I am feeling sentimental. It's our first Christmas since Shane and I lost our mothers. It's been a sorrowful year and a little tough to get into the holiday spirit. I wanted to share this photo from our dining room. Shane made the plate rack. It holds some very dear treasures from both of our mothers plus my grandmothers. It is my hope that one day this plate rack, just as it is, will be displayed on a wall in my own daughter's dining room as a tribute to the women who came before her.

Rustic Industrial Dining Table

Grace in Houston had a vision. She wanted to meld rustic with industrial to create a super-sized dining table for her Tuscan-style home. Grace sent photos of her space and of tables with elements she liked to give us ideas for creating her custom dining table. It features 5" rustic pine legs and a brushed metal 96" x 45" top. Gorgeous!

The table is lovely! I absolutely LOVE it!!! It looks so nice I almost don't want to use it and getting it dirty ;). We will be testing it out for dinner this weekend.

Secret Santa, Take 2

As if my Secret Santa weren't already generous enough... another package arrived the other day, this one from Hawaii!

Whipped Shea Creme by Passion Moon Potions

Inside was a sandalwood scented jar of whipped shea creme by Passion Moon Potions that feels scrumptious on my dry elbows! Sandalwood is my favorite scent! Plus, as a bonus, there were two sample size jars of Kukui Nut Cream and Pineapple Buttercream Shea. I won't have to worry about dry skin this winter!!

If you are a regular reader of this blog, or the Shaka Studios e-blasts, you know we've had a very tough year filled with much sadness. We just don't seem to be in the holiday spirit. Aside from some random lights on the outside of the house, we haven't done any holiday decorating. It's December 14th! Christmas is 11 days away!

A couple of months ago, on a lark, I signed up to participate in a Secret Santa Soiree hosted by Suzanne over at Coloradolady. In all, 66 women signed up to participate. Bless Suzannes' heart for taking on the task of matching partners and then staying on top of everything!

As I said, this has been a rough year. To be perfectly honest, I signed up and received my swap partners' info and then promptly FORGOT about it until Suzanne sent out a reminder email that we had 5 days to get our packages mailed off.

I tried to find a couple of the things on my parnter's wish list with no luck. Maybe because my heart wasn't in it. I managed to put together a package, mailing it off with two days to spare.

Guess what?

Yup. I promptly FORGOT about the SSS as soon as my package was mailed.

Today, I attended a holiday luncheon hosted by a friend. Her house was decked with mulitple trees and oh so festive! It was a tad dissapointing when afterwards, I opened my own front door and walked into my undecorated home.

Then the doorbell rang. The UPS driver left a couple of packages on the front porch and dashed off. Well, at least he rang the door bell. The first box I opened had some beautiful custom made nickel plated bolt covers I'd ordered for a clients' bed. Inside the second box was this:

I have been collecting Hallmark Star Wars ornaments since I was a teenager - over 20 years! I must have mentioned that on the Secret Santa questionaire. Being a granddaughter, wife and mother of artists, I have an appreciation for talent! This pen and ink drawing is very good. However, tears flooded my eyes when I realized the figure is made up entirely of my name, Kandas, written over and over again.

The artist is Maria Sambs Botelho. I googled her name and discovered she has a shop called Personalized Sketches on Etsy. Trust me, photographs do not do her work justice.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart to my Secret Santa. This is one of the most memorable, thoughtful and amazing gifts I have ever recieved.
To the recipient of my half-hearted attempt to be YOUR Secret Santa: be on the lookout for another, more thoughtful package in the coming weeks. Better late, than never.

Tam's Jams - Wondefully handcrafted jams with big chunks of fruit inside! We each had a favorite!

Karma Soap from Cassias Garden - handmade luxury in a bar

This morning we fixed whole wheat biscuits just so we could savor our new jam purchases, accompanied by ethically roasted coffee with a cause. And we washed up afterwards with a lathering of karma.

Of course having other pieces of your work, I'm not surprised....but truly grateful that you picked such exquisite pieces of tiger maple to enhance the brilliant finish on the table. I had requested tablecloths for my new table on my Christmas wish list. As the holidays approach, the giant Asian factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This year will be different. This year Americans will give the gift of genuine concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is!

It's time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in Chinese produced wrapping paper?

Everyone -- yes EVERYONE gets their hair cut. How about gift certificates from your local American hair salon or barber?

Gym membership? It's appropriate for all ages who are thinking about some health improvement.

Who wouldn't appreciate getting their car detailed? Small, American owned detail shops and car washes would love to sell you a gift certificate or a book of gift certificates.

Are you one of those extravagant givers who think nothing of plunking down the Benjamin's on a Chinese made flat-screen? Perhaps that grateful gift receiver would like his driveway sealed, or lawn mowed for the summer, or driveway plowed all winter, or games at the local golf course.

There are a bazillion owner-run restaurants -- all offering gift certificates. And, if your intended isn't the fancy eatery sort, what about a half dozen breakfasts at the local breakfast joint. Remember, folks this isn't about big National chains -- this is about supporting your home town Americans with their financial lives on the line to keep their doors open.

How many people couldn't use an oil change for their car, truck or motorcycle, done at a shop run by the American working guy?

Thinking about a heartfelt gift for mom? Mom would LOVE the services of a local cleaning lady for a day.

My computer could use a tune-up, and I KNOW I can find some young guy who is struggling to get his repair business up and running.

OK, you were looking for something more personal. Local crafts people spin their own wool and knit them into scarves. They make jewelry, and pottery and beautiful wooden boxes.

Plan your holiday outings at local, owner operated restaurants and leave your server a nice tip. And, how about going out to see a play or ballet at your hometown theatre.

Musicians need love too, so find a venue showcasing local bands.

Honestly, people, do you REALLY need to buy another ten thousand Chinese lights for the house? When you buy a five dollar string of light, about fifty cents stays in the community. If you have those kinds of bucks to burn, leave the mailman, trash guy or babysitter a nice BIG tip.

You see, Christmas is no longer about draining American pockets so that China can build another glittering city. Christmas is now about caring about US, encouraging American small businesses to keep plugging away to follow their dreams. And, when we care about other Americans, we care about our communities, and the benefits come back to us in ways we couldn't imagine. THIS is the new American Christmas tradition.

Broccoli Salad

I love broccoli salad. I've looked high and low for a great, simple broccoli salad recipe and recently discovered just the right one at Behind My Red Door.

The stars must all be aligned because today I found broccoli crowns at the grocery store for 99 cents per bag! As soon as I put the groceries away, I assembled the ingredients:

I only used two of the 12 ounce Broccoli bags.

Dumped the broccoli, nuts, fruit and onions in a bowl.

Whipped up the super easy dressing.

Tossed it all together with my hands. Messy!

Filmmaker Tate Taylor Turns to Shaka Studios for "Help"

Tate Taylor's film The Help just spent it's 3rd week at the top of the box office grossing a cool $14 million over the weekend.

Mr. Taylor certainly knows how to create something wonderful from an idea. In 2007 he wanted to recreate the bed from his Grandmother's southern home. He turned to Shaka Studios for "help."

After several phone conversations, Shane created a tiger maple pencil post canopy bed based on the vision Taylor set forth. Mr. Taylor was so pleased with his bed that he immediately phoned to thank us, and then forwarded the following photos of the bed in his Los Angeles home.

The following year, we received this letter:

I hope this finds you and your wife well. It's been almost a year since my bed arrived and I just wanted you to know that I love it as much if not more than when I first put it together...

Seriously, it is so beautiful and stunning and envied by all my friends. I travel a lot now and so hate sleeping anywhere else but on my bed. You are a true craftsman and should be very proud of the work you do. Have you gotten to work with Tiger Maple again?

New Waverly Weather

We had a rain storm last night. Immediately following the first boom of thunder, the power went out! It was restored within the hour. Today, several street lights in town were still non-functional. The great news is that right now, the temperature is ONLY 90 DEGREES! We've had months of +100 degree temps and this "cool" air sure does feel good!

Only 90 degrees in New Waverly, Texas at 1:30 pm on August 25th. Woot!

August is our anniversary month! It has been 13 years since we founded the current incarnation of our custom furniture business, and 24 years since Shane built that very first roll top desk.

Is it a Hutch or a China Cabinet?

I've been tweaking the categories on our website to be in keeping with the categories Google suggests when submitting products to their "shopping" pages. I found something curious that needed further research. Google offers the following taxonomy suggestions:

Furniture > Hutches

Furniture > Kitchen & Dining Room Furniture > China Cabinets

According to WiseGeek there are several types of hutches: kitchen hutch, china hutch and buffet hutch.

"Most hutches are purchased to provide extra storage space, though some may also be purchased to showcase keepsakes or china, or to use as a place to serve food."

Websters defines a China Cabinet as a "cabinet (usually with glass doors) for storing and displaying china" and offers the following synonyms: cabinet, breakfront, hutch, cupboard, dresser.

Since diving into this custom furniture adventure 13 years ago, I've learned that my West Coast furniture definitions are not universal.

I alway thought a hutch was two peice cupboard with an open top and closed bottom. I thought cabinets were permanently installed, as in kitchen and bathroom cabinets. I thought a china cabinet had glass doors. I thought a dresser was for clothes. Until today, I have never heard the term breakfront.

Good things just keep happening!

We’ve had several requests to create a bed in the $1000 price range. Rather than lowering our construction standards, we sought to find a way to create a well-made heirloom quality bed for less.

Introducing our new Primitive Bed!

Shane will handcraft each Primtive Bed using “make-do” lumber, the way our pioneer forefathers did! Just what is “make-do” lumber? Any lumber we have laying around the shop that can be painted – usually poplar, possible pine or maple. The design is reminiscent of hired man’s and Shaker beds.

The 4-sided tapered head posts will measure 36 inches tall. The foot posts will measure 21 inches tall. The top of the mortised head board will be roughly 40 inches from the floor. The Primitive Bed is offered in 5 primitive painted finishes. Choose from box spring or platform mattress support. Optional ropes are available but to keep costs low, no further customizations will be offered.

And the cost for a queen-size Primitive Bed? Just $1000 to the first 5 customers. Twin & Full are a little less. King and California King are a smidge more.

The following video by Ask the Decorator, explains that Shaker furniture has a "plain and simple aesthetic quality that has made it an attractive decorating choice for many people."

Shane uses the same techniques to create Shaka Studios furniture as the Shakers did themselves.

Shane sometimes replicates the work of the Shakers. Shaka Studios Pioneer Dry Sink is a reproduction of one of the oldest furniture peices at the Sabbathday Lake Shaker Village in Maine. The original was built circa 1810.

More often, Shane finds inspiration from the Shakers, creating his own designs for modern living, based on Shaker principles. Shaka Studios handmade TV stands are a perfect examaple of how Shane applies Shaker aesthetics to contemporary usefulness.

Studio Spotlight: Distressing and Packing a Stephen F. Austin TV Cabinet

It requires a total of 7 days from first cut to freight out to complete most media cabinets. Before we can make the first cut, we need to order and receive all the materials, so it can take up to 6 weeks from "start" to "finish." But the core of the building requires 7 days. I will be covering the build process in an upcoming article.

In the following video, Shane Rodarte reveals part of the process he uses to create his authentic-looking multi-layer aged, distressed painted museum finish on a Stephen F. Austin TV Cabinet. Shane perfected his museum finish process over a 10 year period, after much trial and error. Shaka Studios keeps it green by using low-VOC water-borne paints, stains and lacquers and some secret ingredients that are not revealed in the video.

Pay attention at the 2:50 mark, Shane is sanding by hand, between coats of lacquer. It's all the little details!

After the finish is cured, Shane carefully packs the cabinet for shipment to Colorado and watches as the freight truck drives away.

During the summer months, Shane opts to head to work in the early morning to avoid the late afternoon heat. This week he has been working on a pair of pencil post beds:

Today in the studio, Shane put the finishing touches on a pair of antique pine distressed stain Sady's Nightstands. The pair will be heading to Wyoming soon. The nightstands feature dove-tailed drawers, tongue and grooved top with breadboard ends, and pioneer baseboard. The reverse panel doors have opposing hinges so they can sit on either side of a bed or couch.

I love Birkenstock sandals!

In fact, I wore a pair to my own wedding. I never professed to be a traditionalist and since Shane refused to wear a tuxedo, we had a "theme" wedding in the backyard of our home. Granted, Birkenstocks were not around in the 16th century, but they sure were comfortable, and that corset sure wasn't.

Shane will be the first person to tell you that I am frugal - very frugal. I find purchasing clothing at full price very difficult! Now, you have to keep in mind that I was a sporting goods buyer before I was a custom furniture consultant. I know what the markup is on clothing! Plus, clothing is seasonal and trendy, you only get a year or two of wear out anything, anymore. It makes sense to wait to purchase a blouse or pair of pants after it goes on sale.

However, I do not skimp on shoes. With the exception of athletic shoes, I only purchase well-made, classic shoe styles. Athletic shoes only last 6 months, at best. So, why waste good money on them? A good pair of shoes will last for years. In fact, the blue clogs in the photo below are 15 years old. They go great with jeans, and they get plenty of wear during the winter months. I paid $150 for those clogs. That works out to $10/year. The thing is, I intend to hang on to those shoes because they are still in great shape!

Shane wears his Birks at the shop, as evidenced by the layer of sawdust. The arch support helps his knees from aching which means less visits to the chiropractor.

Our daughter wears Birks to help her posture. She has scoliosis and the negative heel helps her stand straighter. Again, fewer chiropractic visits.

Wearing well-made shoes saves us money in the long run. Since we replace them less often, it also means less waste goes into our local landfill.

At this point, you are probably wondering what any of this has to do with handmade custom furniture.

A few weeks ago I received an email from a woman who said she was considering purchasing a Waverly Low Post Bed but was having trouble justifying spending "that much money" on a bed for her 13 year old son.

Let's do the math:

The Imported Solution: I found a four-poster bed on a popular danish import store's website for $299. I then went to yahoo answers to find out how long I could expect furniture from said store to last. The answers ranged from 4 months to 5 years. I'm an optimist. Let's use 5 years.

$299 divided by 5 years is just under $60 per year. Reasonable, right?

After 5 years, when the bed is falling apart, where will that bed end up? Your local landfill.

According to wikipedia, the average US male lives for 75 years. So, the 13 year old son will probably live another 62 years. Ignoring inflation, a bed that lasts 5 years will need to be replaced TWELVE times in his lifetime for a total of $3588. And each of those beds will end up where? Your local landfill.

The Shaka Studios Solution: A queen size Waverly Low Post Bed in our primitive painted finish is $2500. The bed is designed and built to last a lifetime, or four But, we'll just say one for the sake of easy math.

$2500 divided by 62 years comes out to a little more than $40 per year for a well-made bed with classic, timeless lines that will never go out of style. That doesn't sound like "that much money" to me and I'm frugal!

Do your pocket book, and your local landfill a favor, invest in a well-made bed. Handmade furniture costs less in the long run, plus it is better for the environment.

An Angel Gets Her Wings

Many of you have been following our updates regarding our friend Amber’s 19 month battle with leukemia. Amber ascended to heaven on March 19th and we laid her to rest yesterday.

Our daughter is shown here with Amber at the Houston Space Center in 2008. They were such great pals. Amber being the sillier of the two.

Amber always had a smile on her face, even when her pain was unbearable. She was an amazing young woman. Her passing is a great loss to many people.
