Joan is No Longer in a Pickle

Joan in Tomball, Texas contacted us recently. She was in a pickle. Pickled Oak, that is. It was all over her home. She asked us to give her home a pickledectomy. So, we stripped the pickle, made new doors and drawer fronts, and finally added our country primitive painted finish in java on black. We just made these two beautiful custom chests of drawers for Simpler Tymes in Columbia, Tennessee: The pine Split Top Chest of 4 Drawers is 30H x 38W x 18. It features dovetailed drawers, a scalloped baseboard and has a mustard on black primtive painted finish. The pine 9 Drawer Dresser is 40H x 68W x 19D with black on java primitive painted finish. The Finish Line: Custom Faux Finishes

August Anniversary

August marks Wood Designs, Inc.'s TENTH anniversary!

Yup, Shane and I have been working side by side for the past ten years as we have transformed from a small garage based shop into a 5 person operation with a client list that includes some of the hottest designers in the USA. What a journey it has been! Okay, so to be honest, we were only in our garage for about a month. But, I WAS pregnant at the time. A Brief History Shane started Wood Designs in Bryan, Texas in 1987. He challenged himself to build a roll top desk. He succeeded. Sold the desk and started receiving commissions for more custom furniture. In the mid-90's, Shane moved to The Woodlands, Texas and co-founded Rodarte Bros. Furniture Manufacturing. Rodarte Bros. did contract work for Cargo Furniture Stores. They made Entertainment Armoires, Bookcases and Jefferson Beds:

In 1998, Shane and I were married and decided to start our own company. We incorporated Wood Designs, Inc. in August 1998. We continued to do contract work for Cargo Furniture until 1999 when we launched our Pioneer Home Furnishings brand. We changed the name of our brand to Shaka Studios in 2005.

The name Shaka Studios came to us in a brain storm. Shane said that he wanted our brand to represent who we are in a more personal way. And to convey that we are not a large manufacturer but rather a small custom studio. I joined the first three letters of his name (Sha) with the first two letters of mine (Ka) and came up with Shaka Studios. We both liked it. It's pronounced Shay-Ku, by the way.

There you have it, the brief history of Wood Designs, Inc. And here is a sneak peak at our future:

This king size tiger maple platform is currently in production at the shop. The headboard is a raw edge slab of tiger maple. The sides of the platform are also tiger maple. The process to finish tiger maple takes roughly 5 days. Check back in about a week.
